Tis the season to eat healthy

We already know that everybody’s grandmother, mother and aunty will be hard at work in the kitchen showcasing their prowess to create a great Christmas feast, featuring all our favourite foods. From Chicken, Pilau, Nyama Choma and Chapati the list could go on forever.

But with everything that has happened in the last two years, the pandemic, the lockdowns, and the emphasis on taking care of one’s health.  What if we adopted a healthier feast this Christmas? Don’t get us wrong, we are not saying just eat salads this Christmas we are saying make all those delicious dishes you want but make them healthy. How you ask, well it’s simple. It starts with the small things, from what you eat to how you eat it.

For example, think about the three junk foods or drinks you are most partial to, and halve the amount you consume. While you’re at it, double your vegetable and salad habit. If you fancy dessert, offer to share with someone or look for fruit-based options.

You could also avoid sausages and other processed meats instead go for a more organic route aka “homemade mutura” not only is it just as delicious as it is better for you. Plus making it can be quite the family bonding experience.

Also, instead of carbohydrate-heavy dishes such as pasta, pizza and rice, select main meals that include lean protein foods and salads or vegetables. Or switch up for the brown option, that is brown rice, brown chapati and even brown ugali.

It’s barbeque season so we know the grills will already be fired up make things more interesting at the barbeque with grilled vegetables to go with your grilled meats.

To avoid unhealthy fats, it’s best to steer away from deep-fried offerings such as chips, wedges, battered or crumbed chicken and fish. Many curries can contain hidden fats as well.
